Our History

Our history starts with Italo-Canadians living in the Fraser Valley who felt the need to have a place to be able to share and connect to two of the most important things in the Italian Culture: Food and Music.

To answer to this need our founding Fathers decided to organize events, from banquets to dances to bring a community together and keep our culture alive.

The 12th of May 1979 at the St. Joseph Church hall the first official banquet started a tradition that to this day all the directors and the members of this Society keep alive with numerous events and cultural activities like Italian classes and Bocce tournaments.

Here’s a brief introduction to some of our events. Keep an eye on our events page and subscribe to our calendar to keep you up to date on our social activities.

Of vital importance, and the main mission of the Fraser Valley Italian-Canadian Society is to promote the Italian culture to the new generations of Italian heritage and non. To do so we make sure our events maintain a certain accuracy to the oldest costumes and traditions of Italy.

Namely our annual Grape stomp!

At this event you will see the tradition of making wine come to life in a fun and playful way,
where several teams of fancy dressed members will compete in stomping the most juice strictly
using their feet only.

Our annual hat dance is another event that our club loves to organize and attend. One of our most unique events, the Hat Dance fuses a great banquet setting with a twist of fun and creative entertainment.

In this event the members, adults and kids alike, are encouraged to wear their best and most unique hat to be part of a competition that will pick the best, most creative, and most unique hat/costume. The winners will get some bragging rights and a nice prize that will brighten the evening even more, until the real highlight comes in… the Easter Bunny himself visits our hat dance and not only he always has plenty of candy for all but he also takes pictures with all of the actual kids and with all the “kids at heart” that want to snap one with our famous fluffy friend!

Held in May, the Anniversary is the birthday of the Fraser Valley Italian Canadian Society! Every year we get together to celebrate the birth of our club and the people that made it all happen.

Since 1979, from our founding members to our youngest ones, we get together to eat, dance and have fun always keeping in mind the beloved members that left us too soon.

The highlight of the party is the cake! And the surprise entertainment that spices up the dinner with unforgettable performances!

What an amazing thing is the Summer!!

To celebrate the summer and the great outdoors with our community every year we organize a Picnic at Williams Park in Langley. Our incredibly talented directors cook an array of delicious foods that our members can enjoy under the shade of the trees of the beautiful park.

Since we favour our little members we always organize fun games and activities. For our Bocce afficionados we have tournaments and competitions always on the go.

Most exciting of all is our famous Spaghetti Eating Contest!

This event is one of the most beloved and characteristic events. This country style get together is held in remembrance of simpler times and it is enjoyed with the great company of live music and a fully stocked bar to quench your thirst after many hours of dancing.

Every year in December, Santa comes to visit the FVICS and with the help of his trusted elves he brings gifts to all the kids that attend the amazing party!

With great entertainment for the adults and the little ones the Christmas With Santa party is a true favourite for all ages.

An elegant and fun party to celebrate the arrival of another year. Expect live music, incredible food, midnight snacks, and champagne.

Truly a wonderful night to begin the year the Italian way!
